Fidel Castro Left His House to Get Some Cheese

If you want to get Fidel Castro out of his bedroom, apparently all you’ve got to do is dangle a wedge of Pecorino in front of him. Just days after it was announced that the United States embassy would reopen in Cuba, Castro made the rare public appearance when he met with an impressive “19 cheese masters” this past Friday. (Which, by the way, seems like a whole lot of “cheese masters” for the tiny, insular island.) Despite rumors of ailing health that have persisted since he first stepped down from office in 2006, the former president visited with the cheese masters for four hours, speaking on a panel held at the Food Industry Ministry auditorium. Castro doesn’t get out much these days, but apparently even he is unable to resist some artisanal curds.
