Miss Ollie's, the restaurant that marks a much anticipated return engagement for former Hibiscus chef Sarah Kirnon, debuted today in Old Oakland with limited hours. The location is the former Jesso's space at the corner of Ninth and Washington, in the Swan's market complex. As the Scoop reports, the deal for now lunch only, with a specific lunch platter special each day (today was her famous fried chicken), along with a number of sides and smaller dishes, like a Creole ham and sweet potato salad with capers and olives; Piri Piri pork shoulder with field greens; or the Caribbean staple of rice and peas. See Kirnon's opening menu, with handwritten notes, below.
As discussed earlier, the place is named for Kirnon's grandmother, who taught her her love of food and whose fried chicken recipe she still uses. And the model for the place is the kind of Caribbean
one-stop-shop restaurants she knew growing up, where the main dish changes every day.
Tomorrow's special, available from 11:30 a.m. until it runs out, will be curried goat, and on Thursday it will be oxtails. We're still awaiting word back from Kirnon when dinner service might start.
Miss Ollie's - 901 Washington Street at 9th - Open Tuesday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. until the food runs out.
