Jake’s On Market Closes With Final Shout-Out to Haters on Yelp

After just nine and a half months in business, Jake’s on Market is calling it quits. First-time restaurateurs Tim Travelstead and Brad Becker, who named the Castro restaurant after their college-age son, took over the former 2223 space in January and remade it as a somewhat more spare bistro with a focus on comfort foods. It never quite found its rhythm or identity, and closed as of Friday with a note on the door from Travelstead and Becker thanking their customers (“[we] just wish there had been more of you”) and pointing some blame for their failure on unscrupulous Yelpers and those “people who rooted for our failure before we ever opened our doors because we weren’t the same restaurant that had previously occupied the space.” See it all below.

This means there are now three significant pieces of restaurant/bar real estate available within a block of each other: 2223 Market; the former Blue at 2337 Market which closed in June; and Trigger at 2344 Market which sold off its liquor license and closed over the summer as well. Not to mention the other empty spaces in the ‘hood, the former Luna (558 Castro) and the long empty Patio, which are awaiting new tenants; and the former Home, which Chipotle is hoping to take for their own.
