The iconic, glass-walled bar at the corner of 17th and Castro known as Twin Peaks (and sometimes, less kindly, “the Glass Coffin”), which notably got left off of the Chron’s recent Top 100 bars list, went up before the Historic Preservation Commission last week. Commissioners are considering giving landmark status to the bar because of its role in the city’s LGBT history — it’s widely considered one of the first gay bars in the country, and certainly in the city, to have big picture windows facing the street. “It represents our community’s transition from being underground to being open for all the world to see,” says Supervisor Scott Wiener, whose district includes the Castro. It remains to be seen whether the building owners, who are separate from the bar’s owners, will support the designation because it will limit their ability to make changes to the building down the line.
