S.F. Has More Restaurants and Bars Than Anywhere Else. Really.

Even you, New York. Even you.

Well, we'd always heard it was true — that San Francisco had the most restaurants per capita of any city in the U.S. — and now a new study just confirms it. We are number one, ladies and gentlemen, out of 100 metropolitan areas in the U.S., with almost 40 restaurants per 10,000 households, and New York is a distant fourth with a paltry 25. Also, we're the only city to land on both the top ten lists of restaurant density and bar density — we're number eight on the list of most bars per 10,000 households, and we're technically tied with Las Vegas except we have more bars overall.

Below, the lists, which are pretty interesting. You see that Long Island and New York are separated as two metropolitan areas, and coming in a distant second to S.F. on the restaurant list is Fairfield, Connecticut, which is way down in the southwest corner of the state near the New York border. Also, you'll recall that a 2010 survey found that San Franciscans spent more of their income eating out than New Yorkers, so there's that too.

As for the drinking towns, Trulia notes that most of them are in the Midwest, and that kinda makes sense — those winters are long, bleak, and boring. Also, this ranking only comes out of the top 100 metro areas, therefore small towns like La Crosse, Wisconsin may still in fact be the most booze-soaked per capita.

The rankings were compiled by Trulia using the most recent U.S. Census data, including County Business Patterns data, which tallies restaurants and bars. And what's more, a restaurant was defined for these purposes as a sit-down restaurant where you pay after eating — which means if you counted all the counter-service spots in S.F. our total would be even higher.
