Last week we alerted you to the opening of Doughnut Dolly, a new shop just behind Pizzaiolo and Bakesale Betty specializing in cream- and jam-filled doughnuts. Well, owner Hannah Hoffman is just rounding out her first week and will reopen tomorrow morning with a third pump in action, which means she can offer three flavors instead of two — all the doughnuts are filled to order, you see, and this week’s flavors will be chocolate-hazelnut, raspberry jam, and her signature “Naughty Cream.”

Hoffman’s other specialty is spicy, salted Mexican chocolate, which is a doughnut filling you’ll not likely see anywhere else. Also, when she ends up with leftover doughnuts, Hoffman’s been known to turn them into doughnut bread pudding the next day.

The shop has been in the works for the last five months, beginning with a Kickstarter campaign in March, and Hoffman’s inspiration came from a recent filled-doughnut trend in London, as well as her love for the Doughnut Plant in New York. The name Doughnut Dolly is a term that was used for women who regularly brought coffee and doughnuts to the troops during World War I.

Anyway, check it out when you’re over there. Doughnuts are the new cupcakes!

Doughnut Dolly - 482B 49th Street, Oakland - 510-338-6738 - Open Wednesday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., or until doughnuts sell out.
