Foodinistas from the West Bay tend to think of the East Bay as Oakland and Berkeley, and occasionally they remember that there’s wine in Livermore. But south of Oakland, in the unincorporated areas of San Lorenzo, Ashland, and Cherryland, a new community-run urban farm and CSA program has launched called Dig Deep Farms and Produce. Their aim is help combat obesity, encourage healthy eating, and prevent crime through job creation, and they’ve been doing so for two years, in part by selling “grub boxes” to local residents containing fresh produce, ranging in price from $10 to $25. Fog City Journal pens a nice piece about the organization, which is helping one of our nearby “food deserts” by using vacant plots of land to grow local food for a community of some 37,000 residents.
