This week in reviews we have Matt Stafford offering the first formal review of Dixie, Joseph Humphrey’s Southern-inflected restaurant in the Presidio. He says Humphrey and his team are doing “terrific food that satisfies both belly and palate,” and he’s a fan of the “California-Southern” cocktail program too. He recommends skipping the corn soup and the chicken and dumplings, but recommends the fried quail with garlic waffle, the “fantastic” black cod, and the roast duck with turnips. [SF Weekly]

Mr. Bauer pays a revisit to Maverick, following on the promotion of chef de cuisine Emmanuel Eng. Like we were, he’s a fan of Eng’s lobster bread pudding and smoked cod, as well as his creative and refined platings. He also recommends the squash blossom appetizer, and the pork belly starter as well, and concludes that Eng “shows promise to evolve in a positive way.” The restaurant previously had two and a half stars under chef Matt Brimer, and he keeps them holding steady at two and a half.
