Regarding Three Twins’ $3,000 Sundae

Three Twins Ice Cream, which currently lacks a San Francisco outpost after that fire in the Lower Haight, boasts on their quirky menu the “most expensive sundae in the world,” priced at $3,333.33. Founder Neal Gottlieb explains to the Chron that a third of the cost of the sundae is in fact the food itself: it’s a banana split topped with three sauces made from very expensive dessert wines: a 1960s vintage Port, a Chateau D’Yquem, and a German Trockenbeerenauslese. Also, it comes with a cellist who’ll take requests while you eat it. Has anybody ordered it yet? Nope. And Gottlieb doesn’t exactly have the kindest words for whoever would. “If someone did, it would be an absurd individual — probably new money — who is set for life.” Also, he hopes they’d share.
