La Oaxaquena Reopens After Nine-Month Break

But where will we get our insect fix??

Beloved grasshopper-taco emporium La Oaxaquena (2128 Mission Street) promised they would reopen after mysteriously closing last September — it turned out to be a health-code violation, but owner Harry Persaud has also kept up a busy catering business — and now they have. As Mission Local reports, the taqueria which earned the distinction of Best New Mexican Hole-in-the-Wall from SF Weekly is back open after the nine-month hiatus, but they don’t serve those grasshoppers anymore after the health department determined they were not FDA-approved insects. Persaud says he’s taking the menu in a more Mayan direction. We can only hope, for blogging’s sake, that they still have fried tarantula. [Mission Local, Earlier]
