Bottle Cap Still Not That Good, Says Hochman; Miller Rounds Up Summer Cocktails

SF Weekly’s pinch-hitting critic Alex Hochman returns this week with a review of Bottle Cap (1707 Powell at Union) — a surprising choice given how long the place has been open but sure, we were curious how the place was doing almost a year after Bauer rolled his eyes at them. And it sounds like it’s still not that great! Hochman is unimpressed with much of the food, saying the menu’s “eclecticism borders on zany,” and comparing some fried chicken thighs to “the version found at Safeway’s deli counter.” Also, the salads are weird, but he is a fan of the pierogis, and the ever-so-nineties tuna poke. Over at the Guardian, Virginia Miller does a roundup of cocktail bars around the Bay, with mini-interviews with notable bartenders whom you might want to patronize this summer. We’ve got a recipe for the Summer Stomp from Heaven’s Dog, and Miller exchanges words with Aurora Siegel of the Hotsy Totsy in the East Bay, Jeff Lyon at Range, and Jonny Raglin at Comstock Saloon who admits he doesn’t get too adventurous when he’s out at bars where he doesn’t know the bartender. “I typically order dry martinis at any given bar since its REALLY hard to fuck up cold gin.” [SFBG]
