A retired pilot up in Humboldt County recently found a very large oyster that may or may not be a Guinness record-breaker for the world’s largest. It’s over a foot long and six inches wide, and he took it to an oceanographer at Humboldt State University to have it officially measured, in preparation for applying to Guinness. The man, Richard Mesce, tells the Eureka Times-Standard that he’s been hunting for huge mollusks for the last six years, ever since finding a ten-inch oyster in the same waters in 2006. We suppose everyone needs a retirement hobby. [Eureka Times-Standard]
