This morning chef Charlie Kleinman shares the news of the launch of Wexler’s Back, the new barbecue truck spinoff of his Financial District restaurant Wexler’s (568 Sacramento Street). It’s going to be primarily a lunchtime operation, and they’ll be parking the truck right near the rear of the restaurant, on Commercial Street between Montgomery and Leidesdorff. “We’ll be smoking ribs, brisket, chicken, and pulled pork on board the truck,” Kleinman tells Grub Street. “And there will be three sauces: a Texas-style sweet and tangy one, a Carolina-style vinegar-based one, and a mustard sauce as well.” He also promises some traditional sides, like potato salad, hush puppies, and braised greens.

Kleinman, a one-time Chron Rising Star who continues to draw fans to Wexler’s for his upscale twists on southern and barbecue fare, has been working with owner and partner Matt Wexler on getting the proper permits for the truck for well over six months now, and it hasn’t been easy. But now the Wexler’s Back launch is set for Friday, May 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it will be happening simultaneous with Wexler’s regular lunch service. The truck will then continue to make weekday appearances in the same spot, for lunch only, and Kleinman says they will also be booking nighttime and weekend events as well.
