You don’t need a Wharton grad to tell you that tough economic times have taken their toll on what was once deemed the “hippest street in town.” A quick cruise past its many vacant storefronts speaks volumes about South Street’s current sad state. Still, there’s a glimmer of hope. Meal Ticket’s A.D. Amorosi reports that Billy Curry, who’s was plying the masses with Margaritas and burgers from Copa Banana back when Stephen Starr was booking the likes of Cyndi Lauper and U2 at the Ripley just up the street, is working with his nephew to open Redwood, an upscale wine, whiskey and small plates spot next to Copa. The venture might just be the shot in the arm that the neighborhood’s needed to regain its footing. Only time will tell for sure. An opening is expected later this spring or early summer.
