Sadness swept through the snack world over the weekend on news of the passing of James S. Herr, the potato chip patriarch behind Chester Country’s Herr Foods Inc. The 87-year-old founder of the iconic chips and pretzels brand had been battling respiratory illness for some time before succumbing to pneumonia last Thursday, USA Today reports. Herr, who built the multi-million dollar company up from the ground with a $1,750 investment into a small potato chip manufacturer in 1947, is survived by his wife Miriam and more than 20 grandchildren. Following a private interment for the immediate family, a public memorial next weekend will celebrate Herr’s life. Check the Herr’s website for details. [USA Today]
