How very terrarium-y.

Weird Fish (2193 Mission) has been MIA for quite some time now, and last month we caught wind that some new owners had finally taken over the place and would reopen it as Dante’s Weird Fish, with a menu similar to its early days. The secret to the original success of the tiny Mission restaurant was always its brief menu with an emphasis on vegan items, and fried fish — with the added vegan bonus of fried vegan items. While earlier chefs tried to kill off popular dishes like the seitan-based “Buffalo girls,” new chef-owner Ryan Simas (who is also chef de cuisine at Farallon) is sticking to the winning formula, and the new menu features a number of the original beloved items, like the fried pickles, and some new stuff like fried polenta sticks and “shrimp malaise” tacos.

Check out our slideshow of the revamped interior from designers Reynolds-Sebastiani Design Services, who also did some work on the patio at Chambers.

Also expected to open soon, just next door, is The Perch, the new daytime incarnation of The Corner, where Simas and partner Peter Hood are planning a European-style cafe with coffee and a small-plates menu, due by late spring.

Tonight’s relaunch party kicks off at 5:30 p.m., but they’re open all day.
