Yikes! Berkeley’s Café Fanny (1603 San Pablo Avenue), which was opened in 1984 by the great Alice Waters and her brother-in-law Jim Maser, is closing due to financial hardship, according to a press release. “We’ve been struggling for a long time,” says a manager to the Scoop, but it sounds like it may close and reopen with a new name and concept. According to the release, “It is the right moment in time to explore new possibilities for this small space that can still house the romance and idealism of the original.” Waters named the restaurant for her daughter Fanny, now 28 — who’s lately been living in London and buying very expensive produce. If you want to say goodbye to the place, you’d better hurry — it closes tomorrow. [Scoop]
