“At this point the Michael Jackson thing is kind of, like, ‘Who cares?’” says chef Mani Niall, who worked for the late megastar back in the 80s and has bore the moniker of “former Michael Jackson chef” ever since. But he admits to the East Bay Express that he likes how it “gets people talking.” Niall, who was also executive chef for Just Desserts’ wholesale operation, is opening a new all-day bakery-café called Sweet Bar in the former Mimosa Champagne Lounge at 24th and Broadway, in Oakland’s booming Uptown district. The plan is to have coffee and baked goods in the morning, sandwiches at lunch, and beer and wine with savory and sweet stuff at night. He’s aiming for a summer opening. [EBX]
