So after more than a year of chest beating and saber rattling, all this talk of privatizing the state’s liquor store system appears to be nothing more than a bunch of empty promises and a lot of hot air. Seems the word out of Harrisburg now is modernization, not privatization, as more and more lawmakers get on board with plans to run a tighter, more profitable booze-selling ship. According to the Inky even Governor Corbett, who ran his gubernatorial bid on the promise of privatization, is copping the reform stance.
The plan put forth by House Majority Leader Mike Turzai last summer is all but recognizable, with all the cuts and revisions its received. And despite it being neutered and declawed beyond recognition, thus sparing the embattled booze board for the foreseeable future, its supporters maintain that the push toward privatization is indeed still on. It’s just that no one’s holding their breath waiting.
