When we were working on our urban barbecue roundup last year, we here at Grub Street had some difficulty figuring out the story with Double D BBQ (1240 1st Avenue, Oakland), which we’d heard good things about but which isn’t always open and doesn’t always answer the phone. Now, the East Bay Express’s Jesse Hirsch manages to catch them open, and about their brisket he declares, “Along with the ribs from Slow Hand BBQ [now making occasional appearances outside Doctor’s Lounge in the Excelsior] this was hands-down the best barbecue I’ve had on the West Coast.” [EBX]
