Another Castro Eatery Bites the Dust: Luna

It's been quite a big twelve months for turnover in the Castro, where now a total of seven longstanding restaurants have closed, making way for a major food makeover in the 'hood. Following on the most recent closures of 2223 and Nirvana, today we get word via Eater that decade-plus-old brunch spot Luna (558 Castro, a.k.a. Cafe Luna Piena) has closed. This means that maybe soon, with a little luck and influx of talent, the Castro will no longer have the reputation of being one of the worst food neighborhoods in town!

Luna was known for large mimosas, mediocre food, a pleasant back patio, and terrible service. So, since the patio remains the prime asset, we look forward to something more noteworthy moving in.

Among the other changeovers that have happened nearby or are still in process: Nirvana is becoming a BBQ place in the coming weeks called The Dancing Pig (544 Castro); Fork Café (469 Castro) is also opening soon in the former Fuzio space; 2223 is becoming Jake's (2223 Market) within the next month or two; Baghdad Café became Criolla Kitchen (2295 Maret); and Capri Ristorante became Canela (2227 Market).

And the large, well located Home (Market and Church) remains shuttered and on the market, and hopefully that will find a well-funded buyer soon. (As for The Patio [531 Castro], which has sat empty for the last decade, we've pretty much given up hope on that ever opening, and owner Les Natali has allegedly made the deal pretty disadvantageous to anyone. It's basically a permanent write-off at this point.)
