The holiday weekend also marked the end of sixteen-year-old Castro mainstay 2223 (2223 Market), a closure we’ve known about for some time. As reported earlier, the restaurant was sold to new owners, first-time restaurateurs Tim Travelstead and Brad Becker, who are renaming it Jake’s on Market (or possibly Jake’s Diner, as it appears on their liquor license app), after their son. In a message on 2223’s voicemail, chef Melinda Randolph offers a slightly choked-up farewell, “On behalf of everyone here at 2223 we want to say a heartfelt thank you for all the years, sixteen of them, that you’ve supported us,” she says. “Although this journey is over, no goodbyes, just farewell for now.”
As we earlier understood, the closure and remodel are going to be brief, and we note that the new owners’ liquor license has already come through. The concept for Jake’s will be American comfort food, with chef Erik Hopfinger at the helm. We’ll update you as soon as we hear a firm opening date.
