Juhu Beach Club to Go Permanent in the Mission, But Will Pop Up for Dinner First

Earlier this year, Top Chef alum Preeti Mistry launched a modest lunchtime pop-up called Juhu Beach Club, serving modern California twists on Indian street food in the front part of a liquor store on 11th Street. Having wound that down in August, Mistry hints to Grub Street that she’s got a permanent location in the works in the Mission, which is heading to the Planning Commission soon — likely because the space is not currently a restaurant and will require a special permit. In the meantime, before that opens, she’s launching a series of weekly dinner pop-ups, Thursdays at La Victoria Bakery (24th and Alabama) starting January 5.

Mistry returns, with dinner this time.

“I wanted to try out dinner since our permanent location will have lunch and dinner,” Mistry tells us. “I’m working on baby-back ribs in a vindaloo-style tangy BBQ sauce. And there’ll probably be more snacks like fried bhajia of all sorts, heartier entrées like biryani or braised lamb shanks … and I’ll try out some steamed Gujarati snacks like dhokla, khandvi, and patra, which are taro leaves, steamed and then fried with chickpeas and spices.”

Mistry also says that upcoming weeks could bring a collaboration with Jaime at La Victoria featuring some more Indian-Latin fusion items like the Uncle’s chicken curry taco we loved so much.

Reservations for the first event, and future dinners at La Victoria, are encouraged. Get a seat here for one of three seatings on January 5, and note that the $5 reservation deposit will go toward your full bill. The four-course dinner (menu here), will be $35 per person, and will give you the first hints of what Mistry will be up to once the as-yet-unannounced, brick-and-mortar location becomes a reality. Mistry says that she’s working with Planning now on the Mission location, and we could have details on the address by next week.
