Per Diem to Open Friday, December 16, in the Financial District

Among the late-year openings we still have to look forward to is Per Diem (43 Sutter Street, near Market), which Grub Street first broke the news about many months back, and which we recently mentioned was on the horizon. Today we get the official word on the place, which will open Friday, December 16, featuring a food menu by chef Adam Hinojosa, formerly of Osteria and Café des Amis, leaning in a California-Italian direction. The name and concept for Per Diem comes not from the expense-account world of salespeople, etc., but refers back to the Gold Rush era when prospectors talked about how much their gold claims could yield “per diem,” or per day.

In tribute to that era, which turned San Francisco from a tiny Mission outpost to a bustling city practically overnight, the Per Diem team has hung a vintage 31-star flag behind the bar paying homage to California’s admission into statehood in 1851. The finishes in the space will also reflect the same old-timey feel.

In addition to regular table seating, the 2,500 square foot space includes a full bar, and a private dining room.

The ownership team of Darren Matte, Logan Shedd, Cameron Baird, and Sean Wells brings with it Matte and Shedd’s experience opening The Brick Yard on Union Street, and Wells’s experience designing Mamacita and Umami.

Lunch and dinner will be served from the start, and happy hour goes from 3 to 6 p.m. Notably menu items include an oyster po-boy with cornmeal-fried local oysters; a pizzetta with burrata and cherry tomatoes; and a truffle and tomato brisket.

Per Diem - 43 Sutter Street - 415.989.0300 - Open 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., Monday through Friday - Opening on Friday, December 16
