Small, independent movie houses are struggling in this media-saturated, megaplex world, and it’s a wonder to us that more of them haven’t gone the booze route already! Following in the footsteps of the Sundance Kabuki Cinema, and the now dormant Parkway Theater in Oakland (which started doing it in the mid-90s), the Roxie Theater has put in for a liquor license to serve beer and wine, as Mission Mission alerts us. It’s a perfect fit, being in the Mission and all, and probably would have been a smart move for the Red Vic years ago. (They’re now closed after 30 years, and guess what’s taking over part of their space? A bar. The Alembic.) Perhaps whoever buys the Balboa might want to consider it? Expect the Roxie’s liquor license to come through in early fall. [Mission Mission]
