It takes a bit sometimes for Monterey news to reach us up here, and Grub Street learns that as of June 30, Restaurant 1833 has opened in the historic Stokes Building in downtown Monterey. There was a bit of a shakeup late last year within the management team behind Pebble Beach Food & Wine, Coastal Luxury Management, who opened Cannery Row Brewing Co. last summer and had been planning to open Restaurant 1833 by year’s end. It seems to have meant a six-month delay, but now the place has swung open its doors with a fresh renovation to the historic adobe structure and a former Per Se and Café Boulud chef, Levi Mezick. Says CLM’s Robert Weakley, “We wanted to create a restaurant that is an homage to the area’s rich history and bountiful agriculture, but also offer a place that is both rustic and refined for locals to enjoy anytime.”

Guests have the option of enjoying cocktails before dinner in a “living room” with leather sofas and wingback chairs, and in addition to the formal dining room there’s an al fresco option as well, under a pergola and beneath the property’s 200-year-old oak trees.

We hope to have some photos of the space soon, but below, the full dinner and cocktail menus, as well as a separate absinthe menu!

ABSINTHE

The infamous elixir rose to popularity in the bohemian culture of Paris during the turn of the century. While Absinthe was originally invented in Switzerland, the artists & poets of the “Moulin Rouge era” turned this mysterious spirit into a generational phenomenon. Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allen Poe, & many more gave absinthe the credit for their best creative output. Absinthe is a neutral distilled spirit that is infused with a host of different herbs and spices the most important of which is wormwood. Wormwood contains a chemical called Thujone & in large quantities has hallucinogenic qualities. As conservatives & prohibitionists grew more aggressive towards the counter culture, absinthe unfairly sat directly in the crosshairs. As a result of a mostly baseless smear campaign, absinthe was made illegal throughout most of the western world for roughly 100 years. Recently studies were successful in proving that consuming absinthe did not cause the reckless & bizarre behavior it was accused of. It was ruled that absinthe could again be sold legally here in the United States & all is right again in the world. Absinthe at 1833 can be enjoyed the classic style dripping ice water over a sugar cube for the traditionalist, or Russian “Pyro” style for the adventurist. Either way, you can expect it to warm up your soul and maybe even make you see the world through the lens of some of history’s greatest artists. Guests, meet the Green Fairy. Green Fairy, be nice!
