Walzwerk Gets the Check Please! Treatment

The new season of everyone’s favorite semi-awkward citizen-reviewer show has kicked off on KQED! And Episode Two of Check Please! Bay Area features a trip to stalwart East German restaurant Walzwerk, which preceded the current craze for Germanic food by about a decade. Owner Christiane Schmidt is really, really German, and she talks about wanting to bring the more Eastern European-influenced food of the former DDR to a public that had really only seen Bavarian food before. And, like any good Check Please! episode, one of the three citizen reviewers — the old guy — says he prefers a more “light and airy” sort of restaurant, and this dark German place with a Communist bloc aesthetic “just isn’t for [him].”
