Fresh onto the Union Square/Tenderloin scene comes the latest summer opening: Jasper’s Corner Tap and Kitchen (401 Taylor Street at O’Farrell), in the former Ponzu space in the base of the Serrano Hotel. The name comes from San Francisco founding father Jasper O’Farrell, whose portrait has been muralized by the door; and the design by Puccini Group is in a modern, tavern-inspired vein, with polished concrete floors, booths, and dark, bare wood tables. The official opening date is Wednesday, July 27, and the restaurant-bar will be open for breakfast and dinner to start. As we mentioned earlier, the Burritt Room’s recently crowned bar star Kevin Diedrich will be heading up the cocktail program, and the bar is already lined with a bevy of tinctures and esoteric bitters for your tasting pleasure.

We’ll have tavern-y food menu from chef Adam Carpenter for you shortly as well.

Update: Here’s the food menu, and the cocktail list.

This portrait of Jasper O’Farrell adorns a column near the entry.
This mural depicts a map of the city along with a “post-apocalyptic language” that looks a lot like Russian. Or some J.R.R. Tolkien thing.
In addition to the eighteen beers on tap at Jasper’s Corner Tap, there will be six wines on tap as well. Oh, and lots of nice cocktails.
A semi-private dining area at the rear.
