Southwestern-Style Restaurant Mohave to Take Bombay Ice Creamery on Valencia
The Bombay Ice Creamery and Bazar spot (548 Valencia), which is quite large and has been cutting a pretty depressing profile on Valencia since shuttering last fall, has a taker. That would be Dylan MacNiven, the guy behind Woodhouse Fish Co. and also, incidentally, the older brother of this guy, one of the hippies who won The Amazing Race a few seasons back. The Scoop catches the agenda item from the Planning Commission, who'll decide this week whether to grant MacNiven his conditional use permit for the space. He says he plans to build a 100-seat restaurant with a possible built-in outdoor area at the front, kind of like what Gracias Madre has, but with fireplaces.
The menu plan is Southwestern with "a California sensibility." (We're guessing that means no Frito pie.)
Things are contingent on Planning's decision, though the item is already recommended for approval. If all goes well, Mohave may make it open by the end of the year.
It should be noted that by the end of the year or early next, Valencia Street's poised to be an even more intense restaurant row than it is now, with multiple spaces that were not restaurants turning over into restaurants. A little rundown of what's on the way: Abbot's Cellar, Amber Dara, a new Tacolicious, Mosto (a tequila bar), House 530, Cyan, Chapel Restaurant and the Second Line Café, Etcetera, maybe a La Rondalla replacement, and possibly a new Charles Phan venture.
