Esquire’s annual update of their Best Bars in America list — a list, we should say, which tends to be heavy in the dude-friendly arena of beer halls and beloved dives with only a few nods in the direction of metrosexuals and cocktail geeks — is just out, and the San Francisco portion of the list remains mostly unchanged from last year with a couple notable exceptions. Despite landing on their earlier “15 Bars Every Man Should Drink In Before He Dies” list and being praised for being “unyielding in its punkness,” the Toronado in S.F. has fallen off the national list this year. Coming up in the ranks is Comstock Saloon, which David Wondrich highlights as a new addition, in particular pointing to that vintage piss-trough that remains intact along the floor around the bar. Also added this year is the Bar at Nepenthe in Big Sur, most likely for the view.
