Onetime Tenderloin institution Original Joe's, opened in 1937 and damaged in a 2007 fire, will not reopen on Taylor Street as once hoped, but will be relocating to North Beach as was rumored last summer. The Scoop gets word today that the new spot will be the former Joe DiMaggio's (601 Union Street) at the corner of Washington Square Park. Owner John Duggan calls it "a perfect fit" since the space was also home to another historic Italian eatery for decades, Fior d'Italia, from 1953 until its demise in 2005. Estimated ETA for the new Original Joe's is this fall, after an exhibition kitchen build-out, and the moving of some of the original booths from the Taylor Street location to connect the new space with the old.
