Monroe to (Possibly) Open By Valentine’s Day

Monroe, the new North Beach lounge we first noted last summer as moving into the former DragonBar space (473 Broadway), is approaching an opening date, and co-owner Arvin Matthew spoke to Grub Street about aiming for a soft opening on or around Valentine’s Day, the week of February 14. “Construction is pretty much done, but there’s still a lot finish work,” Matthew tells us. As for the food menu, “We’re going to have a light tapas-style menu. We have a pizza oven so there’ll be pizza, also meat and cheese, snacks.”

They just won approval two weeks ago from the Planning Commission to have amplified music after midnight, until 1:30 a.m., and the style of the place is “Hollywood speakeasy,” complete with a huge horse painting (see rendering below).

Furthermore, he and partner Nader Marvi have hired an experienced bartender from New York who they say he’ll be doing more than your average North Beach vodka-cran-type drink-slinging — think seasonal, even.

We’ll update you as the opening date approaches.
