Where to Drink

Try Some Mystery Wine Straight From the ‘Barrel’ at Barrique

It’s officially the weekend, so we turn your attention to a newish, previously mentioned venue for wine-drinking, across the street from Quince and Cotogna, called Barrique. The idea is “barrel tasting,” but the eight house wines they pour are actually all through a tap system that’s rigged through a barrel facade, as SFoodie explains — since real barrels wouldn’t keep the wine very fresh after being exposed to a few days of air. All are “guaranteed to be interesting,” and are offered without label or winemaker being identified, only the region they’re from, the idea being that you concentrate on the flavors and the winemaker’s skill. If you require some knowledge of who made what you’re drinking, they’ve got a menu of stuff by the bottle as well.
