Don’t want to take our word for it that this was a crazy year for wine growers? The Napa Valley Register chimes in with their year in review, noting the top stories which are dominated by this year’s wacky weather — it was a freezing cold summer in Northern California (in case you hadn’t heard and/or felt it), broken up by a hot flash in late August that shriveled many a grape.
Also of note in the trend column: wineries are selling off inventory at deep discounts, sometimes in secret, to places like Grocery Outlet and bargain basement websites; alternative packaging like box-o-wine, mini-kegs, and tiny tasting bottles are all the rage; and Riesling remains huge.
