In addition to explosive cries of joy and free Volkswagen Bugs for everyone, a local bakery operation appeared on Part 2 of Oprah’s very final ‘Favorite Things’ show yesterday. Richmond-based Galaxy Desserts, who produce and distribute frozen, ready-to-bake croissants for Williams-Sonoma, was featured for the fourth time in eight years. Oprah says, “I’ve never had a croissant that tasted better, other than Paris.” The first time Oprah gave a shout-out to the croissants in 2002, master pastry chef Jean-Yves Charon says the company prepared to sell about 1,000 extra boxes, and ended up selling 15,000. They were featured the following year for their molten chocolate cake batter, and again in 2005 for the croissants on her ‘Classic Favorite Things’ show. This year, perhaps in a gesture toward calorie-consciousness, Oprah featured the mini-croissants, which retail for $40 a dozen.
ABC 7 paid a visit to Galaxy Desserts in the wake of the news, and they’ve added an extra shift of bakers to try to keep up with the anticipated new business.
