Wine critic Eric Asimov writes in the Times that Sonoma Zinfandel may be “step[ping] back from the abyss,” and along with his panel he recommends ten Zins that he’d be proud to serve at dinner in these latter days of alcohol-content snobbery. As he writes, “Zinfandels veered away from me in the 1990s, becoming for the most part huge, dense, powerful monsters, pushing past 16 percent alcohol and overwhelming any food in their paths.” On his list are some “more restrained” wines that occupy a middle ground between claret-like and port-like, and the favorite is a 2007 Porter Creek Old Vine, clocking in at 13.8% and which he calls, “graceful yet well flavored.”
