Around the New Year we heard talk about the historic Grant Building at 7th and Market (currently boarded up at the street level) becoming some kind of hotel with a nightclub and restaurant, possibly on the roof. Now, via this week’s Planning Commission agenda, Grub Street discovers that plans are moving forward for a 484-bed “upscale hostel” with a 3,500-square-foot nightclub and lounge, as well as two rooftop terraces totaling 8,500 square feet, and a 2,500-square-foot restaurant, presumably on the ground floor. The office building was built in 1904, and managed to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire, at least structurally, because it was so solid and heavy. Plans for renovating the building include restoring its historic cornice, and recreating the storefront character at the street level that existed in the building’s heyday.
How will they fit 484 beds in a nine-story building, you ask? They’ll be divided up among 94 rooms — this is a hostel after all.
The whole thing is slated to open in late 2012, and construction will begin pending City approvals and the vacating of the building’s remaining office tenants. There are no details yet as to the nature of the restaurant or nightclub, but we hope at least one of the two is connected to the rooftop terrace. The project sponsors and building owners, 1095 Market Holdings, go before the Planning Commission for conditional use approval tomorrow.
