Today’s Datebook features a story about a program called CHEFS (Conquering Homelessness through Employment in Food Service) which plucks homeless individuals from the streets or halfway houses and enrolls them in a three-month culinary training program, followed by an internship in professional kitchens like Nopa, 1300 Fillmore, and Home. “[It’s] the best culinary school in the city,” says cookbook author and guest lecturer Marlene Gray. But the attrition rate is sort of high, with about a third of students disappearing or dropping out before completing their internships. [Chron]
