Just in time for the warm weather, Jones (620 Jones Street) is opening this Friday in the lower level of the historic Gaylord Suites, complete with a huge outdoor terrace that overlooks Geary Street that Urban Daddy is calling “S.F.’s biggest rooftop lounge.” The team behind the place is Peter Glikshtern and Jeff Whitmore, who co-own Mighty, and they also happen to be simultaneously opening another venue in the Mission: The Public Works (161 Erie, near Mission). While Jones is more of an “adult” environment — with an after-work focus, and a food program from Oola chef Ola Fendert which starts in a couple of weeks, including brunch — the Public Works is a nightclub and gallery space, with several rooms that make it adaptable for parties both huge and small.

They also have what amounts to a mini-sub-station in the building powering the lights and sound system, which Whitmore says was originally used by a covert, federal government-sponsored medical marijuana grow house back in the 90s. The Public Works opening party on Friday, September 24 features a bevy of DJs, and an art opening to kick things off from 6 to 10 p.m. — dancing goes ‘til 3 a.m.

Grub Street broke news of both Jones and The Public Works a few months back, and these two openings mark the first new entries into the S.F. nightlife scene for 2010. And given what a reputation our city has for being a hard-drinking, hard-partying place (so much so that the Board of Supervisors wants to tax our booze), it’s about time we had someplace new to go, right? Update: Jones’ Friday opening is more of a neighborhood preview, with the soft opening date on October 8, and the grand opening around the 15th.
