Booze You Can Use

Booze Tax Advocates to Rally Outside Wine Shop Newsom No Longer Owns

You remember that booze tax that the Board of Supervisors passed last week but which the Mayor is going to veto? We’d already forgotten. Anyhow, supporters haven’t given up the fight and are staging a rally today outside PlumpJack Wines in Noe Valley in order to call attention to the cause, and to Gavin Newsom’s perceived conflict of interest, given that “His company, PlumpJack Group, owns 12 separate establishments that make, sell or distribute alcohol.” The only thing is, he sold his shares in the wine shops and the now shuttered SF-based restaurants (PlumpJack Café and Jack Falstaff) when he became mayor, in order to avoid such conflicts. It’s true, he still has a stake in the winery, but protesting outside that wine shop is a little misleading. And also pointless. [SF Citizen]
