City Supervisor John Avalos recently proposed a new surcharge on every drink in town, and bar owners and hospitality workers are throwing a shit fit, not to mention those of us who simply drink a lot. As Bottoms Up reports, the “mitigation fee” proposed by Avalos is supposed to offset the cost of alcohol-related law enforcement and treatment, and opponents argue that this is only going to hurt the incomes of servers and bartenders. “The way to fund social and education programs is through vibrant local economy - not through new taxes that will hurt local employers and cost jobs,” argued Jon Gasparini, co-owner of Rye and 15 Romolo.
