What do you suppose runs in common with three random, well established local businesses that don’t appear on Yelp? As the Bold Italic’s N.W. Smith discovers, it’s that their clientele is mostly old and non-white. The three places he visits, which exist in a rarefied, almost enviable realm that’s off of Yelp’s radar, are The Jazz Room (a mostly African-American hang in the Bayview), La Oficina (a mostly Spanish speaking bar in the Excelsior that translates, obviously, as The Office — a popular small-town name for a bar) and Homerun Liquors in Ingleside. Perhaps aspiring Yelp Elite members should consider these spots before adding a new review of the Montgomery BART Station.
