Cupcake mania remains in full swing in SF, some years after it swept through some other easterly parts of the nation. The recently opened Cups and Cakes in SOMA (451 9th Street) may not need the extra attention — SFGate readers voted the second-best cupcakes in the city in 2008, just below Kara’s, before they even had a brick-and-mortar store. But we can attest to the quality and the flavors; say what you will about bacon cupcakes, Cups and Cakes’ Pancake Breakfast cupcake with maple buttercream is seriously delicious, as is their PB&J; cupcake, neither of them overly sweet.

If you’re a cupcake fan, be sure to check out their special St. Patrick’s Day flavors: Irish Coffee, Green Velvet, and Chocolate Stout with Bailey’s Buttercream.

Whether or not Cups and Cakes ran them out of SOMA is uncertain, but American Cupcake is relocating from SOMA to 1919 Union Street (formerly Joji’s House of Teriyaki), and they should be open within a few weeks. They just received a liquor license to sell beer and wine, so it sounds like this will be a whole cupcake café situation, and intriguingly just a few blocks from where Citizen Cake is set to reopen the week after next. We smell a neighrborhood cupcake war brewing!
