Is Absinthe Eying the Citizen Cake Space?

Ever tried to get a drink at the bar at Absinthe on a busy night? Standing around their small copper bar is discouraged, which makes ordering one of Carlos Yturria’s well constructed cocktails kind of difficult for all but the luckiest stool-snaggers. It’s no wonder that, according to a nearby industry source, the successful brasserie may be looking to expand down the block into the vacated Citizen Cake space. They’ve been among a few other unnamed chefs and restaurateurs looking at leasing the prominent corner spot at Grove and Gough, just a short walk to the opera, ballet, city hall, and bar-challenged Hayes Valley. But rumor also has it that the rent is prohibitively expensive, especially for budding chef-owners.
