For the under-served SOMA set, the much-anticipated Ironside is now open in the Chronicle Books building down by South Park. Opened by the folks behind District District Wine Bar, it’s just doing breakfast, lunch, and happy hour for now, with dinner due sometime in October. The menu ranges from coffee/wine/beer to the “breakfast empanada” to pizzas (including one with wild boar sausage!) and hot and cold sandwiches (think cold chicken, porchetta and cubanos) for lunch (check out the menu). And lunch really is where this restaurant needs to shine. After work, folks can stray from the neighborhood, but until now there’s been a severe shortage of decent places nearby to sit and eat when you only have an hour. But perhaps there’s an even savvier reasoning behind the expansion: With all those Chronicle editors stopping by, might it just be a matter of time before we see an Ironside/District book deal?
