Fire Damage

Tadich Grill Open, but Broiler Out of Commission

The city’s oldest restaurant is operating almost as usual today after a fire damaged the wood-burning broiler when the kitchen team lit it yesterday. “It was the normal practice to light the mesquite on the broiler and when we looked up we noticed something was wrong,” Tadich Grill manager Rick Powers said via telephone today. “The staff did a great job of evacuating. We were basically just trying to get out of the way of the firefighters.” Powers said the fire had destroyed the flue and wood-burning broiler, but since it was contained and put out quickly, the only other damage was some water on the floor. “Pretty much we had to just clean up a mess the water had left for us… [we’re] happy the fire department was there to save the day,” he said. The grill is without a wood broiler for the time being, though, so is not offering some fish and meat dishes typically cooked on the mesquite. Still, said Powers, things worked out favorably. “We have an 89-item menu and we’re offering 67 of those, so I think we’re doing alright.”
