Mazu in Deep DIY Construction Mode; Gussie’s On Deadline

Those girls at Mazu are working so danged hard. See that lady in the red? That’s chef Silma Salamin cleaning off her dust mask and talking to bartender Leah Abiol in between running wire and reupholstering banquettes. They and Silma’s sister KK Salamin are doing pretty much all the renovations on the old Rohan Lounge space themselves, and it’s coming along. The new mural by Marlena White is up, the banquettes are finished (though not yet installed), the bar and shelves are in, and the lighting is a work in progress. KK said they’re looking at an August 4 opening date.

We also stopped by Gussie’s today to see how that project is coming along, and frankly it looks like they’ve got a lot of work to do (primarily installing a big main door). Michele Wilson said they’ll be open by next week though, come hell or high water. She’s got a function booked in the private room, so it looks like those construction workers are in for a long weekend.
