Following protests and general outcry last month, a Panda Express restaurant has been officially denied permission to open on the University of California, Berkeley campus.
the Store Operations Board of the UC's student association voted five to four last night to deny an official lease agreement with the chain, the Daily Cal reported. The vote followed a slew of protests and petitions from students opposed to the chain's presence for reasons ranging from health concerns to its nature as a chain-store "monolith."
The discussion is not over, however, as the board has agreed to re-enter lease negotiations if the chain addresses student concerns. Here's how the Cal's blog, the Daily Clog, summarized the news:
Shot down by a vote, five to fourOh, you've just got to love English majors.
It would seem that the Panda’s no more
But not all is lost
The talks aren’t yet tossed
If they bring student concerns to the fore.
