A member of the San Francisco Planning Commission may have accidentally opened a Pandora's box of neighborhood ire when he or she apparently mentioned something about Medjool's roof deck being illegal. Could be troubling to the ownership, though when you're a triple-digit campaign donor to the mayor, things like that may be surmountable.
Mission Mission's Allan Hough was at yesterday's Commission hearing, and reported that in the run-up to everybody's favorite agenda item about the controversial Valencia Street American Apparel proposal, one of the commissioners said something like, “It’s come to my attention that the nightclub on the roof of Medjool might be illegal.”
That's hard to verify right now, as the SFGTV tape of the meeting isn't yet available, but we'll surely watch for it.
UPDATE: The tape is up, but it's about nine hours and 40 minutes long, so we're not going to comb through it for the quote right now.
Zoning in the Mission District is in a weird place right now, not just because of the American Apparel flap. On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors voted to correct a clerical error that gave a restaurateur/developer/Gavin Newsom donor an extra 20 feet of height for a proposed Mission Street development. Newsom vetoed the correction, and the board couldn't overturn the veto. The developer: Medjool owner Gus Murad.
